SCROLL DOWN

... it's all about graphics n motion!

Great to have you here!

Creating narrative illustrations, enabling an audience to get driven away, far from reality and deep into a story... that yields such a strong sense of satisfaction! And when it comes to giving life to what was initially a pencil scribble on a piece of rough paper... or even less tangible, as a thought in your head... there are no better words to describe that feeling other than 'a blast of emotions'!

This is why I will stop at nothing in order to further pursue this interest.

Welcome to my digital art portfolio...

The creative stuff...

The creative stuff...

I’m rather a kid… never having to grow up, but always observing, wondering and taking interest in the little things that happen in life.

You probably know that telling stories with visuals is an ancient art. The earliest narrative art takes us back to about 17,000 years ago, and the exciting thing about it is that it is still used, pretty much in the same way, with the same effectiveness today!

We all loved stories when we were young, no? I loved it so much that today I’m a narrative artist myself. Enabling kids to grab onto those graphic elements and find their way into a story in no time, in the same way I used to get driven away with illustrated children’s books, is so much rewarding!

My love for narrations has taken me to further familiarise myself with animations – the ultimate way to blend a story with visuals! As an animator, I feel like I'm the boss of a motion factory, with different craftsmen working for me, as a team. In actual fact I am not. It’s mself and my thoughts and immaginations… I'm rather a kid… never having to grow up, but always observing, wondering and taking interest in the little things that happen in life.

Below I have categorised my works, both personal and commissionedones, according to the different media used. Feel free to venture about, read more about my techniques and see my works... Enjoy!

My animation technique mostly consists of 2.5D digital animation which can be explained as the animation of 2D elements in a 3D environment. I use an array of media in my motion graphics, including digital photography, digital editing in Photoshop, digitally painted objects in Photoshop, vector art created in Illustrator, video footage and audio.

Photomanips is short for photo-manipulations which literally translates to the digital manipulation of photographic images in software, which in my case is mostly Photoshop. Work starts by pencil sketching on paper, where the composition of the image is established, followed by a process of collaging with digitally edited bits and pieces of various photos.

Vector art is the art usually associated with word processing fonts. The advantages of this medium is that unlike all the other media, which is in raster format (hence gets pixelated if enlarged beyond its actual size), it retains its sharpness. My work with this medium usually involves detailed pencil sketching, which is in turn traced in Illustrator.

Digital brushing is painting with digital brushes, on a digital canvas. Photoshop has an array of brushes which simulate normal brushes. Additionally one can customise his own type of brush, this making such a tool a very versatile one. The main advantages of this technique over traditional paint brushing is you won't get dirty and you have the 'undo' option!

Who

Hi, my name is Matthew Grima Connell, also known as 'Mattu'. Although my academic background and my full-time job are scientific, my veins scream their passion for creativity…

I'm a self-taught graphic designer, illustrator and animator. I have worked in the media industry as a full-time designer but it has been a while now since I do creative works on a freelance, part-time basis.

Freelanced my way into major local projects amongst which are the Coca Cola Malta Music Festival and Eurovision Song Contest 2010, and my works have been also to the likings of major local music artists such as Ira Losco, Nadine Axisa and Steve Cesar, as well as to Merlin publishers and Phase Magazine.

Way back in 2009, I have also earned an award for the Best Digitally Enhanced Photography at the Malta Digital Arts Expo. Between 2010 and 2015, I had little to no time for this interest, as I had to dedicate most of my time and energy to restore my old dwelling. But now I have just regained my creative momentum.

What

Inspired by nature's beauty, randomness and intricate textures, most of my works reflect this admiration at first hand. Contrastingly, I am also a big fan of minimalism which is also expressed in some of my works.

How

Collaborated with other artists in live performances, collective exhibitions and in the making of the first local, stereoscopic 3D film... and I look forward to further collaborations.

Should you need my services or would like to collaborate, I’m only a click away! ;)
